Home Security at Christmas

Christmas is one of the busiest times of year for many people, however, home security should still remain a priority. As the nights draw in earlier and we begin purchasing gifts for our loved ones, Wilson Alarm Systems discusses how you can keep your home safe this Christmas.

Prevention

Deterring would-be thieves is the most effective form of crime prevention. If your house is set back from the road or hidden behind bushes or trees, consider adding automatic, motion sensor lighting or a permanent light outside of your home. The lighting will ensure that anyone approaching your house can be seen and may make your home too conspicuous for burglars to break into.

Clutter outside of your home can provide burglars with extra help to get inside. If you have ladders, pallets, or items that make climbing through high up windows easier, be sure to store these away securely, out of sight.

Festive lighting can be a great way to add extra light around your home, but feeding cables through open windows could make your home more vulnerable. If you don’t have access to an outside electrical outlet, consider using solar powered or battery operated lights so you can fully close and secure your windows.

Safe and Out of Sight

You’re likely to have a lot more rubbish from packaging and paper over the Christmas period, but be mindful about how you throw these items away. The packaging you put out to be recycled acts as an advertisement for what is in your home. Dates that your rubbish is collected may change over the festive period, so be sure to check the dates and put your rubbish out as close to the collection dates as possible. You may also want to turn boxes inside out so that the items you have purchased do not show.

Although it may look pretty to have all of your gifts stored under the tree, avoid doing this until the morning of Christmas day. Keep your curtains or blinds closed when it gets dark to avoid prying eyes peeking into your home.
