What to Do If You’ve Been Burgled

Realising that your home has been burgled is a scary and upsetting experience that nobody wants to go through. Unfortunately, thousands of burglaries happen over the course of a year across Leicester, making it vital for homeowners to protect their home. In our latest post, we take a look at what you should do if you’ve been burgled.

Whether you have just come home from some time away or woken up in the morning to find your home has been burgled, it is important that you do not touch anything. It may be tempting to try to restore some order to your home if things have been trashed, knocked over or moved, but doing this may cause you to rub away or distort any evidence left by the burglar.

Something that can be useful is taking photos of the scene. Your insurance company may need photos as evidence of your claim, and in any case, it may help things get sorted a bit quicker to give you one less thing to worry about.

Make sure that you call the police straight away to report the crime. Even if the police can’t get to you straight away, it can be comforting to know that you have reported the crime and that the police are aware. Additionally, you will be given a crime reference number that you will need to give to your insurer.

Although it can be hard to sift through your belongings and work out what has gone missing, it is important that you do this as you may need to take action on certain items. If your credit or debit cards have been stolen, you will need to report this to the bank and have them frozen so that purchases cannot be made with them. If any door keys have gone missing, it is highly advisable that you have your locks changed.
