Top Tips To Improve Security at Home

A secure home is a happy home, but what steps can you take to protect the people and property you love? Explore these top tips to improve security at home and keep the things that matter most safe and secure.

1. Install a Visible Alarm

As well as ensuring that you are alerted instantly should a break in occur, a visible alarm box on the outside of the house acts as an effective deterrent to potential intruders. The latest wireless alarm systems can be quickly installed with no need for cabling and can be configured to match the size of your home.

2. Conceal Your Keys

Avoid keeping house keys in the door, as would-be intruders can use magnets to pull keys through the letterbox. Be careful about where you store spare keys too – a lock box is a secure alternative to a plant pot and allows you to safely keep a spare key to hand.

3. Add Security Lighting

Motion-activated lighting is also effective at deterring potential thieves, as they won’t be able to break in under cover of darkness. Visible security measures like lights and an alarm box also demonstrate that you take security seriously at home, making your property a less appealing target.

4. Protect Windows & Doors

Access points at the back of a property are more popular with intruders, as they can’t be spotted from the street. Make sure patio doors and ground floor windows are locked and keep anything that could be used to break in, like garden tools, securely stored away in a shed or garage.

5. Keep Valuables Out of Sight

Valuable items should never be left on display in view of windows and, for added peace of mind, it’s a smart idea to invest in a safe. Choose a model that features heavy duty bolts for securing the safe to the wall or floor so it can’t be removed.

6. Invest in CCTV

CCTV cameras can provide priceless peace of mind by allowing you to keep a close eye on your home, even when you are away. Modern systems can be viewed remotely using an app on a mobile or tablet, so you can easily monitor footage from wherever you are in the world.

Installing CCTV is also a great way to prevent crime, as cameras are another visual deterrent to potential intruders and, should something happen, CCTV ensures you have video evidence of any break in.

7. Look Like You Are at Home

Whether out at work or away on holiday, there are simple ways to ensure your home looks occupied when it’s not. Smart plugs allow you to remotely turn on the lights after dark or operate the radio so it sounds like someone is home, while timers are an affordable alternative that do a similar job. Avoid advertising your travel plans on social media too, especially if your posts are public.

8. Get to Know Your Neighbours

From keeping an eye on your house when you are away, to alerting you or the police should a break in occur, a good neighbour can help keep your home secure. Regular chats with those living nearby will also mean you are aware of any local security concerns – think of it as an informal version of a Neighbourhood Watch scheme.
